The effects of insomnia can be relieved by hypnosis for insomnia because not only does hypnosis/self hypnosis naturally create in the mind the right mental conditions required for the bringing of actual sleep - if that is the aim - but can also deal with the causes of insomnia which are often psychological in nature. The aim of hypnosis generally, including hypnosis for insomnia is to reach and change subconscious thought patterns when these are found to be responsible for some troubling condition.
Initially though let's take a brief look at some facts about insomnia. According to a fairly recent survey in the US, around 60 million Americans have some form of insomnia, and it appears to be more common among women than in men. The definition of severe insomnia relates to consistently sleeping less than 3-3.5 hours a night (women) and less than 4-4.5 hours a night (men).
There are basically three types of insomnia, transient, acute and chronic. Transient insomnia is very temporary, lasting maybe for a few nights, and would be most likely caused by some readily recognisable upset, which will soon tend to resolve itself. Acute insomnia refers to an inability to sleep well for several weeks. Again there will have been a very specific and recognisable reason for this, and that is what should be addressed, not the temporary insomnia itself.
Chronic insomnia, or primary insomnia, is the more long term sleep disorder which we're concerned with here. This condition is often found to have its roots in some physiological or psychological cause, and this should be investigated fully as a first step, especially before starting to take any medications.
This form of insomnia usually manifests itself in mainly two ways, either in difficulty falling asleep at the beginning of the night, or where the insomniac wakes very early in the morning, i.e. 2 or 3 am and then can't get back to sleep.
Long term insomnia should not be confused with another condition called sleep apnea, which basically has more to do with night time respiratory problems than anything else.
If you have chronic insomnia, then hypnosis should definitely be considered. Consistent sleeplessness prevents you from getting the full benefit of deep, restorative sleep, and results in increased daytime stress, impaired concentration which can cause accidents, memory lapses, irritability and daytime sleepiness.
When hypnosis for insomnia is used along with other aids such as avoiding stimulants before bed and creating a relaxing ambience in the bedroom, then the relaxation techniques that it encompasses will help to deal with and alleviate any fears or anxieties that may be the causes of chronic insomnia, as well as creating the right mental conditions conducive to being able to let go and drop off into a good night's sleep.
The first thing to do is to ensure that your bedroom has a comfortable and welcoming look and feel. This will help to counteract any mental associations between your bed and lack of sleep which may have built up in your mind. When you're comfortably lying down fix your eyes on some point on the ceiling, then begin, from the feet upwards, to feel and allow your muscles to gradually loosen and relax. As this is happening begin to breathe fairly deeply, regularly and slowly.
After a few minutes of this, you may feel your eyes wanting to close, if so, let them, if not just keep them open. Either way, maintain your ongoing and upward muscular relaxation and steady breathing, and now fill your mind with an image either of yourself fast asleep or of some scene that you associate with calm and deep relaxation.
It would be at this point that in many instances you could begin to use affirmations, or autosuggestion, as a means of beginning to impress upon your subconscious the nature of your desired aim. This, however, would not be appropriate with regard to relieving insomnia, not least because with affirmations you need to maintain a certain level of conscious awareness to keep up the repetition of the affirmation and the relevant visualization.
To effectively relieve insomnia the sleep related suggestions would be coming from "outside" in the form of an insomnia related hypnosis download either from your computer, CD player or perhaps mp3. When you've created a restful environment in your bedroom and are relaxed, breathing steadily and visualizing some calm or soporific scene, at that point you begin listening to the soothing, relaxing and sleep inducing suggestions floating gently into your subconscious, and would soon be fast asleep, remaining so for a normal length of time.
It has often been shown that hypnosis for insomnia is one of the most effective long term insomnia treatments available. It is also one of the most completely natural remedies for insomnia if not indeed the most natural, bringing with it no side effects. Additionally, hypnosis for insomnia by way of a relevantly themed hypnosis download, can be used on an ongoing basis, if necessary, at a low one off cost and in your own way and at your own pace.
