The embedded fears which create and sustain fear of crowds - aka demophobia aka enochlophobia aka ochlophobia - can be and have been successfully dealt with through hypnosis in many thousands of cases. This is an anxiety based condition which affects around 1-2% of the general population, and many people who fear crowds understandably take the most immediately easy option and avoid crowded places altogether.
Obviously, though, this means that you're drastically limiting your life in so many ways, and confirming to yourself that the phobia of crowds has got the upper hand and that you should just accept the limitations that it puts on you and your life.
You absolutely do not have to live with it.
Crowd fears are often but not always related to some frightening or panic inducing childhood experience where a child may have become separated from parents in a large and moving crowd and found him or her self experiencing a significant level of fear and distress as the imagination began to create mental images and then feelings of loss and abandonment, which for many young children could be quite a terrifying experience.
Experiences like these can leave a subtle but deep impression on the psyche, in that the original fear and distress experienced doesn't go away and sooner or later becomes mentally associated or linked with any future situations involving crowds.
As is the case with many phobias, the phobic person is on a certain level aware that there's no real or immediate threat or danger in the crowd, but that original fear and feeling of oncoming panic is still there and is still linked to crowds, and so in crowd situations the symptoms occur.
These often include accelerated heart rate, sweating, breathing difficulties, feelings of nausea and mental/emotional distress and alarm, similar in many ways to that of agoraphobia.
While the "seed" of the phobia may have been planted in childhood, it may not start to manifest consciously until a few years later. It is possible for crowd phobia to result from some experience later in life , though ongoing forms of the phobia as a result of this appear to be unusual.
In some cases the phobia starts to manifest at a certain level of severity and then gradually escalates, ultimately leaving the crowd phobic feeling unable to deal with any aspects of crowd situations, including images of or even thoughts of crowds. It affects different people in different ways and to different levels of intensity.
However they all have one thing in common, that being that they're living with a problem that is entirely psychologically based which is good news because while the problem has been created in and by the mind, it can therefore be easily resolved and eliminated in and by the mind.
