This condition is often found to have its roots in some physiological or psychological cause, and this should be investigated fully as a first step, especially before starting to take any medications.
This form of insomnia usually manifests itself in mainly two ways, either in difficulty falling asleep at the beginning of the night, or where the insomniac wakes very early in the morning, i.e. 2 or 3 am and then can't get back to sleep.
Long term insomnia should not be confused with another condition called sleep apnea, which basically has more to do with night time respiratory problems than anything else.

This, however, would not be appropriate with regard to relieving insomnia, not least because with affirmations you need to maintain a certain level of conscious awareness to keep up the repetition of the affirmation and the relevant visualization.
