Phobia treatment using hypnosis/self hypnosis to overcome fear of flying has worked successfully in a high percentage of cases, bearing in mind that fear of flying phobia affects - to varying degrees of intensity - as much as 10-15% of the overall population. Any advice for fear of flying should be based on the principle that learning to overcome this fear involves effectively addressing the negative thought processes and mental associations that have - either gradually or fairly quickly - formed in the psyche of the individual concerned.
Flying phobia, aka aviatophobia, can be so intense that it can have an extremely detrimental effect on the life of the person living with it, more so nowadays as air travel has become not only commonplace but in some instances essential, i.e. business travel etc.
The fear of flying exists as a "stand alone" phobia but can also sometimes come about due to the existence of or a combination of other phobias such as claustrophobia, fear of heights and agoraphobia. Also having previously been on a flight on which there's been some sort of unusual but frightening experience can create and sustain flying fear.
The US Department of Transportation conducted statistical research showing that flight travel is in fact at least 25 times more safe than travelling by car, but this serves only to underpin the irrationality of flying phobia, and would not help with fear of flying or ease the psychological stress and physical symptoms experienced by someone whose subconscious has programmed itself to produce psychological and physical stress at the prospect of air travel.
Fears about flying can be so life limiting in so many ways, and is also more prevalent than is generally realised. A friend of a friend once won a holiday package in a competition which included two first class return air tickets to an exotic and far flung location, but it later transpired that because of this person's phobia about flying she and her partner were unable to go, finally making a less glamorous arrangement which didn't involve air travel.
